Summer is Here! Many of us will be hitting the pool, enjoying BBQs, or spending time at the beach. Here are some Natural Summer Hacks to keep you and your family stay safe this summer!
Essential Oil Safety for Outdoors
The sun gives us that natural vitamin D, however, be aware that some of your family’s favorite citrus oils should not be applied to the skin before enjoying direct sunlight or exposure to artificial UV rays.
Some essential oils contain organic compounds, or furocoumarins, making some people’s skin more sensitive to UV radiation. This may result in temporary darkening of skin pigment and irritation, much like a sunburn. More extreme exposure may cause hives or burns. Avoid sun for 24 hours after applying citrus oils to exposed skin.
Want a more natural alternative to store-bought sunscreen? Why not make your own? With this homemade sunscreen, the inclusion of zinc helps to protect against the sun, while Hawaiian Sandalwood oil soothes and nourishes the skin. Using just a few ingredients, this Sunscreen DIY will get you protect you while smoothing your skin in the process, thanks to Hawaiian Sandalwood! Here is the Recipe:
¼ cup coconut oil
¼ cup Shea butter
1 teaspoon carrot seed oil
2 tablespoons of zinc oxide
2–3 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood oil
- Melt coconut oil and Shea butter in a bowl over warm water.
- Add carrot seed oil and zinc oxide and mix together.
- Add in drops of Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil and stir.
- Place in a jar for storage. Allow to cool for 30 minutes in fridge.
